RESOURCE: Do's and don'ts of editing your U.OSU faculty website

U.OSU is designed to support professional sites for groups and individuals affiliated with Ohio State. The College of Pharmacy Faculty Template allows instructors to highlight scholarly, pedagogical and service activities with pages for a biographical statement, curriculum vitae, teaching overview, course listing, research statement and more.

When creating, editing or adding content to your U.OSU professional site, refer to the table below to review best practices and avoid common mistakes.

Guide to Updating your Faculty Website

 DO DON'T

ADD ALT TEXT

Add a short description of the image's purpose and author's intent. Remove any alternative text if the image is decorative.

(Click on image > Click on "edit" icon > Type your alt text in the text entry box)

USE POOR COLOR CONTRAST

  • Keep overall text-to-background contrast high for maximum readability.
  • Avoid using bright orange, red and green text.
  • Use a combination of color and underlining to call out important text.

ASSIGN HEADINGS

Headings must be assigned in descending order using the text style dropdown menu.

Learn more about heading structure via the Teaching and Learning Center's guide on accessible headings.

USE TABLES FOR STYLE

Tables should only be used for data. Tables should never be used to add style or custom formatting to a slide.

CAPTION VIDEOS

Videos must have embedded captions.

Captioning services can be requested via the General Accessibility Support request form

USE NON-DESCRIPTIVE HYPERLINKS

Links should always be descriptive to let your audience understand exactly what the link does.

Refer to the Teaching and Learning Center's guide on descriptive hyperlinks.
