Transcription and Captioning Standards 

 

Transcript Review Process

When a student has completed their transcription task, they will assign the task back to you for review. Ask yourself the following:

  1. Has the transcription been applied to closed captioning?
  2. Have the speakers been labeled?

If you answered "no" to one or both of the questions above, assign the task back to the student and make them aware of the issue. Adjust the due date on the task for two business days from then. 

If you can answer "yes" to both of the questions above, proceed to the following steps:

  1. Review the transcript of the first 1 minute of the video for accuracy. 
  2. Pick a random point in the middle of the video. Review 2 minutes of the transcript from the middle of the video for accuracy. 

If no errors or less than 3 minor errors are found, mark the task as complete. 

  • Minor errors include:
    • Missing commas

If moderate to major issues are found, assign the task back to the student and make them aware of the issue(s). Include timestamps of where these issues have been found. Request that the student correct the identified issues and complete a full review of the transcript to ensure additional potential issues are revised. Adjust the due date on the task for two business days from then. 

  • Moderate to major errors include:
    • Missed words
    • Spelling errors
    • Missed periods at the end of sentences
