ARTICLE: Copyright Considerations

Copyright and Fair Use

Instructors should consider copyright implications when uploading materials to Hypothes.is, including licensing considerations for electronic materials just as they would for uploading any materials to Carmen. You will want to make sure the use falls under fair use, or another legal exception.

For each reading to use within the tool, faculty should complete a fair use checklist and save their results and load them into Carmen; refer to the following resources and consult with the Learning Design and Multimedia team, as needed:

Additional Considerations

  • There may be additional licensing considerations if you are using materials from the library. University Libraries resources are not linked with Hypothes.is and their license may not extend to use within the platform. For questions about University Libraries licenses, email Kevin Bauer.173@osu.edu, the eResources Licensing Coordinator.

  • There may be options to use instructor created materials or resources with public domain works or openly licensed content.
