Using Make Me Admin for Administrative Tasks on Windows

Overview

The Make Me Admin (also known as MMA) application is a way to elevate to an administrative account on an ASC managed Windows machine.

Previously, administrator user access for Windows users could only be implemented using a separate administrator user local admin (LA) account and password. With Make Me Admin, you are now able to use your OSU password to elevate your account to an administrator user. Make Me Admin must be enabled for a user account, please submit a ticket to request this.

For older installs, you can continue to use the second local admin account, however, if your la account works, you can install Make Me Admin and use your name.# account.

Installation

On your Windows device, the application should be installed upon deployment:

  1. To confirm, please locate the Software Center application
    • Can be done by clicking on the Windows Start Menu and looking for All apps or simply using the search bar.
  2. Search for the Make Me Admin application
  3. If the application is installed, it will have a greyed out Uninstall button as seen below.
  4. After you install the application, the computer will need a restart before it starts working.

Note: Installing Make Me Admin does not activate admin rights, initial ASCTech activation is required, please submit a ticket.

Tip: When you run Make Me Admin for the first time, right click the icon and 'Pin to Taskbar'.

Usage

For security, only elevate to admin when you need to and de-elevate from admin when not needed.

From the Graphical User Interface (GUI)

Click on the Make Me Admin app:

A pop up window will state that you have the ability to Grant Me Administrator Rights:

  1. Press the Grant Me Administrator Rights button to elevate your account to an administrator user.
  2. Enter your current OSU password.
  3. Then, enter a reason for your request. (Please note: that this is a request to elevate to administrator, not a direct request to ASCTech.)

A pop up notification near the bottom right of your screen will pop up indicating you are an admin:

After 30 minutes, admin rights will be automatically removed. If admin rights are needed for more than 30 minutes, go through steps 1-3 under the Usage subheading.
