Windows
From and ASC owned Windows machine you will not need to connect using the VPN even if outside OSU's network. Due to the Always On VPN (AOVPN) your machine will see the file server from wherever you are.
If you are on a non-ASC machine, you will need to be on the ASC VPN, and you will need to use check the "Connect using different credentials" box and use your name.# username as ASC\name.#.
- Open This PC and select Map network drive.
- In the next screen, put in \\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu (or just \\asc-files if on the ASC wired network).
- If you know the exact path you can enter it here, or you can click Browse.
- Individual/private home drives will be in \\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\home\share_name.
- Research and group drives will be in \\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\projects\three_character_unit_name-project_name.
- See the section Mapping Old Share Names to New.
- Note, you can click Reconnect at sign in, if you always want the drive to be mapped. Do not do this if you go to networks where the drive will be blocked.

Mapping Old Share Names to New
ASC used the server names private and shared prior to Fall 2017. After it was home, groups, or files.

Project/Research Directories |
\\groups

One of:
\\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\projects\three_character_unit_name-owner
\\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\projects\three_character_unit_name-owner-project_name
\\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\projects\three_character_unit\project_name |
Notes:
- \\files will still work in the near term, but using asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu is preferred.
- ASC has not created new individual/private home shares since 2017.
- With the trend in mobile devices and cloud storage (OneDrive/Teams) home shares are not as useful.
- Similarly, ASC rarely creates new Department/Unit directories.
- Teams files shared through the OneDrive client serve this purpose now.
- share_name:
- This is usually a name.#.
- However, older individual/ private home shares may be name# or something else.
- Any individual/private home share will go to \\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\home.
- Any research share in \\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\dept will go to \\asc-files.asc.ohio-state.edu\projects.
