How to Change Your Local Admin Password on Windows

Introduction

Periodically changing your lastname.#la account is required to maintain the security of your account. This is a different procedure than changing your OSU lastname.# password.

Note, if these instructions do not work, please contact ASCTech as your machine may not be configured correctly.

You will need to use your OSU User name and password to log into the computer on a daily basis and only use the Local Admin User Name and Password when Administrator changes are required such as adding and removing applications. Whenever Administrator changes are required, a box will appear requesting your Admin User Name and Password.

To prevent data loss, never log into your Local Admin account and use that as your main account to store documents and data. Always log into and use your OSU (lastname.#) account and use your Local Admin User Name and Password whenever you get an Admin prompt.

When changing your password, your password must meet the following requirements: It must contain at least 15 or more characters, must have at least 1 upper case letter, at least 1 lower case letter, and at least 1 number. Special characters are optional.

Your Local Admin Password expires every 90 days.
