How to request new network drop/jack

Overview

New network jacks (also called network drops) are requested through OTDI. This is a billable item.

Procedure

Using a web browser

  1. Go to OTDI's Self Service portal at go.osu.edu/it.
  2. Click on Order Services in the navigation bar on the left.
  3. Click on the Request Now button near the top-center of the screen to initiate a Generic Request.
  4. In the description, be sure to mention that this is a request to install a new network jack. Include the room and building. Be specific about the desired physical location of the new jack. If an estimate is desired (an estimate is recommended), be sure to mention that as well.

Notes

The group that owns the space is responsible for the cost of the installation and should submit the request to OTDI.

The cost of a new network jack varies, and is based on the time and materials required to do the installation. OTDI's contractor can supply an estimate. Costs of $500 to $1,000 per drop are not unusual.

Desktop and laptop computers should be connected to OSU Wireless to avoid the need for a physical network connection. This is in keeping with the OSU Mobile First strategy. If a wireless adapter is needed for a desktop computer, please request one from ASCTech, to be installed at no charge. Performance of the wireless network has been found to be comparable to a normal wired network connection and works well with all common business applications, including phone calls.
