Email Distribution Groups (Lists) vs. Organizational Accounts

SUMMARY
Understand the difference between email distribution groups and organizational accounts.

Distribution groups (sometimes referred to as "lists" or "listservs") and organizational accounts are two types of shared or collaborative email tools. Both will function as a shared email address, separate from any individual account, but they behave in different ways. Either can be requested through the OTDI service desk. Please see the following Service Catalog entries for ordering instructions:

Distribution Groups

Emails sent to distribution groups automatically get redirected to the Inbox of each member of the group. OSU faculty, staff, and students can be added as members of the group. It is not possible to send messages from the distribution group itself.

Organizational Accounts

Organizational accounts are standalone email accounts that contain their own discrete set of folders (Inbox, Sent, etc). OSU faculty, staff, and students can be added to the security group that controls access to the organizational account. The organizational account's mailbox will appear in each user's Outlook navigation pane, below their primary account's mailbox. Any user who is a member of the security group can send messages from the organizational account.
