Overview
This procedure will work on on-campus ASC managed Windows desktops and laptops that are plugged (via Ethernet) into the ASC network, or on eduroam wireless.
Printing from personally-owned devices is not supported, except for Follow Me Printing. We recommend using an ASC managed computer, direct USB, or Follow Me Print. Direct Printing may work on the VPN, but due to the complexity of supporting personal devices our support is limited.

A Note on Drivers
Installing from webprint will also install the current driver.
Follow Me Printing does not need drivers as they are included with the Follow Me Printing install or selected via options on the web site.
For direct printing It's possible to download drivers specific to the printer, but, in general the Manufacturer Microsoft -> Microsoft PCL6 Class Driver or Manufacturer Microsoft -> Microsoft PS Class Driver will work for most functions. PCL is better for HP, and PostScript for Xerox.
The Xerox driver is needed for additional function like stapling, collating, or specific color profiles. You can find the driver by Googling the printer model. To avoid bad drivers, search using the site parameter. For example, a Google search of "xerox altalink c8030 driver site:xerox.com" will provide the correct driver as the top result.
Webprint Server (preferred for all ASC managed machines)
Webprint is accessible from ASC managed machines on campus, and these instructions and printing will work from remote locations due to Always on VPN (AOVPN) on Windows without needing to connect to the OSU VPN.
1. Click on the Start Button in the bottom left corner of your screen.
2. In the search bar, type \\webprint.asc.ohio-state.edu. Then hit Enter.
3. In the window that opens, there will be a list of printers that go by the naming convention XX###-PrinterModel.
a. XX is the two-letter building code (i.e.: DB=Derby, UH=University).
b. ### is the room number where the printer is located. This can be any number of digits, not just the three digits this example indicates.
c. Finally, the last part is the model number of the printer like DB2040-Xerox7545 or UH586-CanonWC5185.
d. Typing the building code and floor will narrow down the search greatly.
3. Browse for your printer in the window. Double click on the printer you would like to install.
The installation process may take a few minutes but will eventually install the printer to your computer. This will only install the printer for your user account. Any other users who may log into the same workstation will have to perform these same steps for themselves.
Follow Me Printing
Follow Me Printing is an option on some large unit Xerox machines. Follow Me Printing is the only print method for iPads, and works from personal machines.
A print is sent to the Follow Me Printing printer, then you swipe your BuckID at the printer to release the job. This ensures that only you can see your printout, and you can go to any Follow Me Printing printer you have access to. Print queues are cleared at 3am, so you'll need to resend if you wait until the next day.
ASC Managed Devices
Follow Me Printing should already be present on Windows machines. If it is not, it is installed on an ASC machine by opening Software Center and searching for and installing "Follow Me Printing".
Once installed you will see "Employee Follow Me Printing" as a printer on your machine:
Personal Devices
There are two types of Follow Me Printing for personal devices: Faculty/staff/employee printer and "student" printers.
Employee printers are located in unit controlled spaces and do not cost money to print to. These should be used from personal devices to printers you are allowed to use for prints related to OSU duties.
Student printers are located in various public locations, are $0.06/page black and white, and $0.20/page color. This is for students primarily.

Direct Printing
Direct printing is an option on personal machines, but webprint should be used in preference for ASC managed machines. We are unable to deeply debug personal machines so these instructions are provided as is.
- Open Printers & scanners in Settings. (You can search "print" from the Windows menu.)
- Click Add device:
- Next to "The printer that I want wasn't listed" click Add a new device:
- Note, if the app finds printers by broadcast, you might have to scroll down to see this.
- Select "Add a printer using an IP address or hostname", click Next:
- Select "TCP/IP Device" in the dropdown and enter the hostname:
- This will be something like as-CH740-HPCLJM533.printer.role.it.osu.edu.
- Older printers not on the printer network may have a name in the ASC domain like prb1090.asc.ohio-state.edu.
- Eventually, all printers will be on the printer network.
- If the driver isn't found automatically select the Manufacturer Microsoft -> Microsoft PCL6 Class Driver or Manufacturer Microsoft -> Microsoft PS Class Driver will work for most functions. PCL is better for HP, and PostScript for Xerox.
- If you are asked to "use the currently installed driver" that is fine.
- Name the printer something descriptive:
- Do not share the printer:
- You're done! Feel free to print a test page:
