ASCTech Standard Computers / Accessories

Overview

  • Any computer equipment purchase on university funds (including research/grant funding) should be vetted through ASCTech before purchase.
  • ASCTech is happy to consult, configure, and place orders for computers and accessories.
  • ASCTech does all purchasing on computer hardware with data: desktops, laptops, tablets.
    • This will ensure equipment is inventoried, configured, and managed to University requirements prior to usage.
  • Lenovo and Apple are our main vendors, not all models are OSU product lines. Please see below.
  • NOTE: Not all computers sold by OSU Buckeye Buy Workday suppliers are able to meet University requirements.
  • We try to keep pricing up to date, but vendors can change prices before we can update.

Accessories / Printers

Please reach out to ASCTech for assistance with any accessories needed for the new computer, such as monitors, USB-C port replicators, cameras, docking stations, etc.

Printers

ASCTech does not have standard printers.

  • ASCTech encourages Follow Me Printing to the unit Xerox machines. https://uniprint.osu.edu/follow-me-printing
  • ASCTech encourages reaching out to your unit’s ASCTech contact if you want guidance as to what is compatible.
    • In Workday hardware approvers only do a basic check that the printer has Ethernet and doesn't have major red flags like requiring a web account (HP e series).
    • Thus we assume the non-ASCTech requestor has done research or contacted ASCTech.
    • Your ASCTech unit lead can provide more information and recommendations.
  • Networking:
    • Printers must have a wired network port.
    • Fallback for networking issues will be direct USB hookup.
    • iPads can only print to Follow Me Print printers.
  • ASCTech does not do maintenance on printers:

3D Printers

ASCTech has some familiarity with Bambu printers, and can set up an X1E on a private network for printing sensitive items. Please reach out if you are considering a 3D printer. Although 3D printing has gotten easier, the devices can be temperamental and we cannot do repairs/deep maintenance on them, much like regular printers.

  • All Lenovo products are purchased through Buckeye Buy. Lenovo standards come from CDW, please consult with ASCTech for custom configs.​​​​​​
  • ThinkCentre, ThinkStation, ThinkPad, and ThinkPad Mobile Workstation are the OSU product lines.
    • Note: The ThinkBook, Legion, Loq, Slim, Yoga, IdeaCenter, and IdeaPad brands are not standard as these are more consumer grade.​​​​

Warranties

If a customer chooses a warranty that is minimal for cost reasons, the customer is responsible for repairs and shipping. ASCTech does not do repairs.

ASC Computer Replacement Program Computers

Note, standard computers from the ASC Computer Replacement Program have a minimal warranty, as we stock spares. If a replacement computer has a hardware issue we will take an equivalent machine from spares, which may be new or a repaired machine. This will become your machine so you do not have to restore files a second time.

Lenovo Warranty

All Lenovos include a Premier 4 year on site warranty. Standard laptops include accidental damage protection by default, but check with ASCTech - though it is included by default some people opt out of accidental damage or have us obtain custom quotes without. ASCTech does not recommend accidental damage on desktop machines.

Dell Warranty

All Dells include a ProSupport Plus warranty, since April 2024. Since late 2020: Standard laptops include accidental damage protection by default, but check with ASCTech - though it is included by default some people opt out of accidental damage or have us obtain custom quotes without. ASCTech does not recommend accidental damage on desktop machines.

Dell ExpressCharge batteries have a one year warranty.

Apple Warranty Description

  • Apple computers/iPads should be purchased with AppleCare+. The cost of Apple Care+ will vary by model.
  • Apple Care+ is available in a 3 or 4 year plan.
  • Since Autumn 2021, MacBooks have no incident fees, desktops still have incident fees for accidental damage.

Student Personal Purchases

Lenovo

The College of Engineering has secured discounts on Lenovo Workstations, such as the ThinkPad P16s, P16v, and P1. These are available to all OSU students. There are also discounted monitor options.

While not budget machines, they are well equipped for research and include 4yr on site warranties with accidental damage protection, to minimize downtime for students. In the near future Tech Hub will be Lenovo repair authorized.

Apple

Currently, OSU's pricing is the same as the Apple higher education price. We encourage students to visit Tech Hub, but there are two Apple Stores in Columbus.
